HASA rental assistance: what it pays and how the rent limit works
How HASA rental assistance works in 2026: the client pays 30% of income, HASA pays the rest directly to the landlord, and rents follow the same payment standards as CityFHEPS and Section 8.
Payment standards
Effective April 1, 2026 (payment standards) · HASA FAQ SPSVC-18 (E) 06/12/2026; DSS-8r 2026 standards| Household | Bedrooms | Maximum rent, utilities included (eff. 04/01/2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SRO | $1,953 |
| 1 | Studio | $2,604 |
| 1 or 2 | 1 | $2,734 |
| 3 or 4 | 2 | $2,997 |
| 5 or 6 | 3 | $3,753 |
| 7 or 8 | 4 | $4,077 |
| 9 or 10 | 5 | $4,689 |
HASA’s own FAQ works its examples at rents below these maximums; the maximum is the DSS payment standard for the household size. Rents above the standard are not approved. A deposit, a broker fee within the legal limit and moving costs can be covered case by case.
How the standard is applied
HASA clients who qualify for rental assistance pay 30% of gross household income toward rent; HASA pays the balance directly to the landlord once it approves the rent and the lease. Clients with no income have the full rent paid. Maximum approved rents follow the DSS payment standards used for CityFHEPS.
